Everyone has the ability to build mental strength, but most people don’t know how. We spend a lot of time talking about physical strength and physical health, but much less time on mental strength and mental health.
We can choose to perform exercises that will help us learn to regulate our thoughts, manage our emotions, and behave productively despite our circumstances – the 3 basic factors of mental strength. No matter what your goals are, building mental strength is the key to reaching your greatest potential.
Here are some of the key traits of a mentally strong people –
Being positive from the inside plays a very big factor to overcome negativeness. Yes, there will be many moments which you get down in life and feel so negative and the tendency to give up in life.
The unhealthy belief about ourselves and self pity and magnify our misfortune. It’s OK to be sad when something bad happens to us.
Being positive is the best solution to make your life and other peoples life better.
To be in Control:
We think other people can control us and we give away our power. If you say, “I have to work late” or “My Mother-in-Law drives me crazy” you are giving away your power. May be she is not nice to us, but it’s up to you as to how to deal with her. YOU ARE IN CONTROL!!
Unhealthy Beliefs about the World:
We tend to think that the world owes us something. We tend to think if I work hard in this world, then I will achieve success. Expecting success to be some sort of cosmic reward will only lead to disappointment.
But I know it’s difficult to give up bad mental habits. You are going to hit a time in life when you need all your mental strength to muster.
When I was 26 years old, I got married to my Filipino wife, bought a car, bought a house and thought I had my life figured out. One day I got a call that my Grandmother was very unresponsive. I took my wife to the hospital and to my sadness the doctor declared by Grandmother as dead.
I thought I lost the most precious person in my life and then my wife told me to stay strong and she decided to take me out for a movie. To my surprise I had a very good time watching the movie with my wife and all my sorrows and sadness had gone.
So, from that day on wards, I only started to think good things about life and to be positive and optimistic.
The secret to be mentally strong is to give up all your bad habits. To give you an example, if you go to gym everyday and lift weights you are increasing your physical strength.
But, if you eat junk food, you will not achieve results. The same applies for mental strength, mentally strong people don’t indulge in bad habits. You need to give up your bad habits. Good habits like practicing gratitude and give up bad habits like resenting someone else’s success. It all starts by countering unhealthy beliefs with healthy ones.
To only way to get over uncomfortable situations is that you have to go through them. Do let yourself feel sad and then move on.
Mentally strong people don’t compare themselves with others. They compare with themselves who they were yesterday and strive to be better today.
