Even though the rapid growth and development of social media has made human life easier, it also has some serious negative effect’s on peoples mental health.
While social media has made the connection between human interaction and engagements from different parts of the world easier, it has also made people addicted to its usage.
The human reliance on social media can seriously harm their mental health, with the average human checking their phone about 28 times per day.
Although the usage of social media can be very beneficial, using them too frequently can have a serious negative effect on your mental health over time and make you isolated.
People are now viewing perfectly filtered photos in social media platforms like Instagram which can have a negative effect on many people’s self-esteem.
How Social Media Affects Your Mental Health
There are many ways that social media can be negatively affecting the mental health that you do not even know about.
Some of the ways that social media can seriously harm your mental health include the following –
Social media has been known to have a very negative effect on people’s self-esteem.
It is common knowledge that everyone has their own fair share of weakness and insecurities, which they often prefer to keep to themselves and not reveal to people.
While frequently scrolling on social media platforms like Instagram or Facebook, a person can come across a perfectly filtered picture and compare themselves to it, and this can result in the damage of creating low self-esteem.
Also stalking a person in social media and staying up-to-date on the status of their relationship can have a negative effect on that person.
A recent study carried out by specialists in the University of Copenhagen showed that a lot of people that are frequently on social media platforms are often prone to “Facebook Envy” while those that have stayed away from the use of popular platforms reported that they felt more satisfied with the state of their lives.
This is because of the people that are frequently present on social media platforms often obtain a sense of worth based on the condition of their lives relative to others.
This will put their happiness in a variable that they would have absolutely no method of managing.

It is very important for us as human beings to be able to communicate and connect with one another.
But when we are more focused on our phone screens, it can be very hard to connect with people instead we become acquainted with their digital facades rather than their real-life personalities.
In general social media platforms are a great way to look back at happy memories and recounting how past events occurred, but it can also affect the way in which a person recounts certain titbits of their memories.
A lot of people spend too much of time trying to take the perfect picture to post on social media platforms all the while ignoring the firsthand experience of witnessing the event with their own eyes.
If all our attention is directed towards taking the perfect picture for your social media audience, little will be left to actually witness the other aspects of experience firsthand.
I am sure you all are aware that good quality sleep is very essential for the mental and physical health of everyone.
However, excessive use of social media platforms will have a negative effect on the sleeping pattern of an individual.
If we keep scrolling through different social media platforms before going to bed, we might spend more time on social media and lesser time to get some sleep.
Some students have also revealed that the bright light from the screen of mobile devices often suppress the release of melatonin in the body, which in turn makes an individual feel tired.
People often get worked up with envy and anxiety from what they see on social media platforms, and this keeps their brain on high alert and prevents them from sleeping.
If you want to prevent this, you should try setting yourself up for not using your phone for a period of time before you go to bed.

Even though people can get a lot of important information from social media, they also get distracted when they are scrolling through social media platforms.
People are constantly engrossed with their social media platforms, that they have become addicted to them.
A lot of people cannot go without checking their phone for a few minutes; this will constantly break their attention span.
This will not just affect the subconscious mind but also the ability of the brain to be able to fully focus when it is awake.
6. Depression and Anxiety
The studies have not just shown that social media can cause unhappiness, but it has also revealed that it can lead to the development of serious mental health issues like anxiety and depression.
Excessive use of social media platforms has to lead many people to start comparing their lives to the fake profiles of acquaintances on these platforms.
This will, in turn, lead to depression and anxiety.
